Each LP (with immaculately recreated period label) comes in a thick 5-mil plastic sleeve. A download card is included in each album. In keeping with the duo’s diminished stature in the market place, The Complete Columbia Albums Collection isn’t big on extras.
If you are interested in the story of how the original analog tapes of these records were brought into Sterling Sound and digitized for these reissues, Michael Fremer’s Analog Planet piece is essential reading. And don’t forget, “180-gram audiophile vinyl” pressed at RTI. Each box is individually numbered to a limited issue of 1000 copies, and contains a 20-page booklet, and poster. The Complete Columbia Albums Collection includes the duo’s five studio LPs released between 19, newly remastered from “first generation analog sources.” Included are the following albums: Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Water and the Greatest Hits LP (14 million copies sold). No one articulated the loss of national innocence, and the unavoidable march of personal fate better than S&G. S&G can be tied to the singer/songwriter mold, ala James Taylor and Carole King, but the depth and breadth of their music, its epic production, intimate melodies and poetic and universal lyric themes were singular then and remain so today.
Their music hasn’t translated well into the current millennium, where hip-hop, saccharine pop and plastic country holds sway and demographic share.
Simon & Garfunkel were a distinctly American, distinctly 1960s-bound duo. Their classic albums – Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Water – portrayed a bittersweet vision of America, told in jewel-like songs that depict the country’s singular joys, lost hopes and unfulfilled dreams. Though their music is largely forgotten and unknown to anyone under 30, Simon & Garfunkel created some of the greatest pop music of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
